Chicago Architecture
2. Harold Washington Library

The Harold Washington Library overlooks the train tracks that run parallel to the street. The building was originally opened in 1991 as the world's largest public library. The building stands a marvelous ten stories, with olden bricks covering the front of the building to serve homage to Old Chicago. Note the Arched window on the front of the building, which is reminiscent of the Beaux- Arts style that you will find at various buildings in the city, such as the Art Institute. The sides of the building contrast the front profile with their liberal use of glass and steal that represents the more modern aura of Chicago. Various ornaments grace the library's exterior, such as the face of Ceres, the Roman goddess of growing plants, a nod to the proud history of agriculture indicative of the Midwest.
