As you walk down Dearborn Street, you will see the Inland Steel Building standing on the northeast corner. The structure was erected in 1957 and is often credited as being Chicago's entry into the era of modern architecture that began to dominate post World War II. Additionally, it is Chicago's first skyscraper to have been built since the start of the Great Depression. The building's exterior features brushed steal as its primary source of siding, as the name would imply. Thin horizontal strips of steal split the lower third of the building's windows, serving as a design element that makes the building stand out. Inland Steel has two main sections. The first is the tower visible while approaching from Dearborn Street that features flexible office spaces. The second building is not much more than a collection of elevators and utilities. As such, the first building is supported by a myriad of exterior columns, and can utilize any floor plan that tenants desire.
