12. John Hancock Center

The John Hancock Center is Chicago's fourth tallest building, and the sixth tallest in the United States, standing at 1,506 feet. The tower's genesis begins with the tower's completion by the John Hancock Insurance Company in 1969, after the building's original owner filed for Bankruptcy. The building is best known for its "X-terior" design in which a series of cross shaped braces cover the outside of the building. This acts as both an expression of architectural marvel and physical support. The building is also known for the John Hancock Observatory, which competes with the Willis Tower's Skydeck. The observatory has a full circle view of Chicago and four states, allowing visitors to see at distances of up to 80 miles. The John Hancock Center is a member of the World Federation of Great Buildings and has won numerous awards.
