In Harry Potter and the Globlet of Fire, the hill on which the ‘manky old boot' (which is actually the Portkey) is found on Ivinghoe Beacon, a prominent hill and landmark in the Chiltern Hills, standing 757 feet above sea level. It is a popular spot for walking, sightseeing and flying model airplanes because of the lift provided by wind gusting up the hill. Located near the villages of Ivinghoe and Aldbury, it is often erroneously claimed to be the highest point in eastern England. That distinction, however, falls to Clipper Down, which rises nearly 817 feet above sea level. The confusion is based on the fact that Clipper Down contains a mapping point that is also called Ivinghoe Beacon. Owned and managed by the National Trust, Ivinghoe Beacon is the starting point for both the Icknield Way to the east and the Ridgeway long-distance path to the west.
