Welcome to Port Orford! There is more going on in this small coastal town than meets the eye, and on this tour, we will take you below the surface of this ocean community to see what makes this place truly unique. Fishermen, foodies, adventurers, scientists, and volunteers – all of these different facets of our community are drawn together around a mutual love and respect for the sea. So join us on this interactive walk from the visitor’s center down to the dock. Along the way, enjoy sweeping views over the ocean while hearing stories from local personalities. By the end of the tour, you will come away with a better understanding of the people who live, work and play on the ocean in Port Orford, as well as the Redfish Rocks Marine Reserve and why we are so passionate about protecting the health of this incredible resource. One quick safety announcement before you embark on your adventure: parts of the tour will lead you onto the beach, even to some areas which will not be accessible at some high tides. So please use your best judgement when you are around the ocean. One thing to always be aware of is that sneaker waves can sweep high up the beach at any time. These are very dangerous, especially if they catch you off guard, so never turn your back on the ocean. Another thing to be aware of is that we are in a tsunami danger zone. If you feel an earthquake, or if you observe the tide rapidly rushing outward, that is your cue to move as quickly as possible to higher ground. With that out of the way, it is time for you to get out there and explore this beautiful coastline and the community that calls it home.
