9. Bruton Parish ChurchBuilt 1660, most original building, steeple added in 1674. A 19th century Baptist preacher, the Reverend Scervant Jones, was beloved for his wit and his rhymes. Jones buried his first wife in the Bruton Parish graveyard under a stone he brought to Williamsburg on the roof of the same stagecoach he used to carry his second wife to the city. As his wife was dying, he swore he couldn't live without her, that there could never be another woman, and asked her to wait for him as they would be reunited. The Reverend had new wife's grave placed between him and his first wife. Organ heard playing on its own, curtains moving, crying from church is blamed on the Reverend's first wife, who haunts the church. The church was a hospital in both the revolutionary and civil wars.
