Welcome to the Apple Capitol of the World! Follow the Apple Trail was developed many years ago to showcase the area’s scenic and historic attractions. The trail has been re-developed so that today’s travelers, as well as local residents, can access it on mobile phones. The revised Follow the Apple Trail showcases Winchester-Frederick County’s apple heritage, as well as orchards, farm markets, and other sites relative to the apple industry. The area’s apple heritage likely formally began in 1776 when George Washington, future President of the United States, sold a parcel of land in northern Frederick County, and on the deed he required the buyer to plant 100 winter apple trees as a requirement of the sale.
