Dallas History

Like most of Texas, the Dallas area was inhabited by Caddo Indian tribes before being claimed by the French during the 16th century. It then became the territory of the Spanish from 1819 until 1821, when Mexico gained independence from spain. After Texas broke from the Mexican state, it remained an independent country from some 10 years before becoming the 28th state in the United States in 1845.

From Rural Outpost to Economic Powerhouse

While looking to establish a trading post to serve the native people and settlers in the area, John Neely Bryan stumbled across the only spot to easily cross the Trinity River in the 1840s and decided to set up a permanent establishment. After enduring setbacks that included attacks from Native American tribes and a devastating fire, the new settlement of Dallas was successfully composed of a post office, general store, and a river ferry, and it grew quickly both before and after the Civil War, blossoming into a boomtown in true Wild West style.

The cotton, railroad, and oil industries would establish Dallas as a commercial stronghold for the southern United States. The production of cotton and oil would follow, promoting Dallas as a major player on the nation's economic stage.

The eyes of the world would focus on Dallas when the city became the setting for the tragic assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963.

Following the backlash that resulted from the assassination, Dallas embarked on a campaign to turn tragedy into triumph, implementing a civic renewal program and new generations of leadership. In the decades to come, the Dallas Cowboys became America's team and major corporations moved their headquarters to Dallas, cementing the city's reputation as a major commercial center for the Lone Star State.

Biggest Little City in Texas

Long associated with oil, cotton, cowboys, and cattle, present-day Dallas offers visitors a unique blend of opulent history with modern flair, from its downtown dining choices to endless entertainment options. The Lone Star State's third largest city is big on style, becoming as famous for its vivid art community, diverse culinary scene, and successful sports franchises as it is for its 10-gallon hats and wealthy ranchers.

"Dallas is a city full of friendly, proud, hardworking people who make things happen. They are less talk and more action."

Renee Rouleau

Far from its former image of a rough-and-tumble oil town comprised of cowboy-hat-wearing tycoons, today's Dallas is a sophisticated city with a laser focus on the future. This ever-expanding metropolis is comprised of lively neighborhoods and a wide range of activities, from world-class museums and galleries to diverse restaurants and family-friendly attractions.

The city's ability to blend Southern charm with commercial finesse attracts travelers with innovative spirits, and an ever-growing arts district is leading its cultural expansion, while its historic upscale shopping district, Highland Park Village, is a big draw for fashionistas. History lovers can look forward to informative historical attractions and sports enthusiasts will appreciate the presence of five professional sports teams, especially the Dallas Cowboys and their iconic cheerleaders.

Come with us to explore Dallas, as city as big, bold, and vibrant as the state it calls home.
