Founded in 1913,"for the benefit of all the people forever", the museum opened its doors on June 6th, 1916.  The beautiful entranceway, which was not created for almost a century later was used for the S.H.I.E.L.D. Headquarters lobby, which is by far one of the newest highlight of the building. Not to be outdone by the architecture, the museum boasts a collection of over 43,000 works for art and is internationally renowned for its Asian and Egyptian art collections.  The Ingalls Library, which was part of the original plan of the museum, had just 10,000 volumes to start, but today as over 431,000 and 500,000 digital pieces.  The works of art are not only housed within the walls of the many galleries of the museum, but can also be seen in the Wade Park which is part of the National Register of Historic Places.  Housed within the Park are many pieces, but most notably, Rodin's, "The Thinker," which is showcased at the top of the museum's main staircase. The state was partially destroyed and never restored after the 1970 bombing which was allegedly carried out by The Weathermen, an underground American Radical Group.  (The group was featured in the movie, The Company You Keep, staring Robert Redford).  The museum is open for tours and holds special exhibitions, lectures, films and muslcal programs and also has a department for educational activities that includes a program called "Education on the Go," which brings arts and art exhibitions to schools.
