The Theodore Roosevelt Island was used as the headquarters for S.H.I.E.L.D. at the foot of the Roosevelt Bridge.  Under the Potomac, which the bridge crosses, was where Project Insight (a weapons program under the direction of Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D) was rumored to be situated. Theodor Roosevelt Island was dedicated as a memorial to America's 26th President and features a variety of things to do including canoeing, kayaking, viewing wildlife, walking and running.  If you are looking to plan an adventure filled day, you can stop by the vistor's center for information on activities and events currently taking place on the island.  Depending on when you go, you will be sure to find an adventure waiting for you. The bridge itself, connects Washington, D.C. with Virginia.  Construction on the bridge began in 1960, and it officially opened in 1964.  Due to the large volume of traffic, depending on the time of day and year, the middle lane is actually reversible with the help of a crane to move the barrier to change the direction of traffic depending on the need for flow.
