The disabling of the guns meant it was possible to start moving the injured out of the area on makeshift stretchers, transporting them 700 yards south to the Calvary Cross on the junction of the road to Breville and away from the imminent bombardment from which the area was scheduled to receive. A captured German doctor who was attending to the wounded from both sides was warned about the naval bombardment due to start at 5.30am but he decided to remain and tend to the wounded. A little later he made a quick trip back to one of the bunkers for additional medical supplies he was tragically killed when the barrage rained down on the area.
