Casa SoberanesHistoric Monterey
9. Casa SoberanesRafael Estrada constructed this traditional adobe brick home on a hillside overlooking the bay in the 1840s. Estrada's family lived here until 1860 when the building was sold to the Soberanes family who lived there until 1922. The Serrano family, whose adobe home was situated just a few blocks away, purchased Casa Soberanes and restored the house in the 1920s and 1930s. The house is beautifully furnished with an eclectic mix of early New English and Chinese trade pieces mixed in with folk art from modern Mexico. Casa Soberanes has a nickname, "The House of the Blue Gate," which comes from the blue gate at the entrance to the garden on Pacific Street. Bordering the paths that meander throughout the sheltered garden are wine bottles, whalebones, and abalone shells. Content Provided By: Historic Monterey
