111 W 44th Street New York, NY 10036 In the heart of Times Square stands the Belasco Theater, which not only has a wonderful theatrical history, but also one that includes strange, ghostly happenings. In 1907, David Belasco opened the Stuyvesant, which he later renamed to the Belasco in 1910. Shubert purchased the theater in 1948 after Belasco's death in 1931. Since he spent so much time there, Belasco had a gothic-style apartment above his beloved theater, and after he died, his ghost was said to haunt the building. Some say he gets fresh with the ladies by pinching their derrieres and was even said to unlock dressing room doors as actresses were getting ready. He's reportedly been seen during rehearsals, and a strong scent of cigar smoke often wafts through the air. His ghost has been seen by many, including actors, employees, audience members, and possibly even by a dog or two. It's said if his ghost is seen in his private box on opening night, that the production will be successful. Although his apartment has been closed and no one lives there, noises such as laughter, partying, conversations, and singing have been heard when no one is in there. The house manager has even reported hearing footsteps while she sits in her office below the apartment. It seems Belasco has some company in the afterlife. A woman, dubbed the Blue Lady, is often seen at his side enjoying a performance. She's rumored to be a showgirl who fell to her death in an elevator shaft. The next time you're in the theater for a production, take a look if you can see through the person standing next to you. Photo credit: Jazz Guy http://www.flickr.com/photos/flickr4jazz/2954271497/
