Central Islip Psychiatric Center was founded in 1889 under the name The New York Farm for the Insane, and was built as a way to ease the overcrowding in the Kings County Farm Colony, but in the 1950s, it too became severely overcrowded. At one point it housed over 10,000 patients. It closed in 1996. The building now resembles something out of a horror movie with bed frames still sitting in place, chairs sitting alone in the middle of the room, and graffiti on the walls. Visitors have reported hearing whispers and conversations when no one with them was talking, hearing screams and moans, seeing shadows and figures, and hearing unexplainable noises. All of these ghostly happenings may have something to do with the nearby Potter's Field, which is the final resting place for more than 5,000 former patients.
