1 Burma Rd Fire Island, NY 11702 Although currently closed for restoration, the Fire Island Lighthouse still has ghostly visitors. The first lighthouse was built in 1826, but because it didn't stand tall enough, it was taken down and some of the stone was used in the completion of the current lighthouse with some extra bricks remaining in a circular formation on the ground. The lighthouse opened on November 1, 1858, stands at 168-feet tall, and cost $40,000 to build. Electricity wasn't used in the lighthouse until September 20, 1938. Today, the 1000-watt bulbs are so strong that the beacon of light can be seen as far as 24 miles away. In 1984, it was put on the National Register of Historic Places. So how did a beautiful lighthouse become haunted? Rumor has it that a caretaker hanged himself in the first lighthouse after his young daughter died. Some say you can hear moans and cries, hear and see doors open and close on their own, see shadowy figures, and hear laughing. Spend some time at the Fire Island Lighthouse and you could end up hearing the caretaker's laughter yourself. Photo Credit PermaCultured http://www.flickr.com/photos/digika/6272199650/
