17 Barrow Street New York, NY 10014 One if by Land, Two if by Sea is an elegant restaurant in the West Village that has a long, rich history. It started out as a carriage house in 1767, and after having several owners, including Aaron Burr, it was said to have been a brothel and saloon in the 1830s. In 1910, it became known by its current name, and has since become well known in the neighborhood and the restaurant industry. Some diners and employees have reported hearing strange noises, seeing dishes move on their own, and seeing furniture moving without reason. There have even been reports of paintings falling off the walls and apparitions walking down the stairs. There are those who believe Burr is behind the hauntings, but he may not be alone. His daughter, Theodosia Burr Alston, who disappeared in 1812 off the coast of the Outer Banks while on her way to visit her father, is said to make an appearance herself. At the time of her death, she was on the schooner, Patriot, when it was lost at sea and was never seen again. Stop over for dinner at One if by Land, Two if by Sea and you may find yourself face-to-face with the apparition of one of the most famous political figures in history.
