26. St. Mark's Church131 E 10th Street New York, NY 10003 St. Mark's Church-In-The-Bowery was built in 1795, and is the second oldest church in Manhattan behind St. Paul's Chapel, but is the oldest church in terms of continuous worship. The church is the burial site of Peter Stuyvesant, who was the last director general of New Netherland before it became New York. Known for his peg leg as well as his leadership, he's also said to be the ghostly apparition haunting St. Mark's Church-In-The-Bowery. Since his death, many have heard peg-legged footsteps as well as other unexplainable sounds. Some have also seen his ghost, which is often accompanied by the unscheduled ringing of the church bells. Shadowy figures have also been seen on the property. Photo Credit: TravelingOtter http://www.flickr.com/photos/travelingotter/5035283030/
