263 Mulberry Street New York, NY 10012 St. Patrick's Old Cathedral opened in 1809, but it was destroyed by fire in 1866. The cathedral was rebuilt, and was dedicated on St. Patrick's Day in 1868. Rumor has it that Pierre Toussaint, a slave who came to New York City from Haiti with his owners in 1787, is the primary ghost who haunts the cathedral. After he arrived in the states, he gained his freedom, and became a hairdresser as well as a philanthropist. Thanks to the money he earned, he also bought his sister's freedom from slavery. After his master died, Toussaint even helped his master's financially strapped wife. He died in 1853 and was interred in the crypt under St. Patrick's Old Cathedral, but in 1989, he was transferred to St. Patrick's Cathedral in Midtown. However, it doesn't seem as if he wanted to leave as it's rumored that he haunts St. Patrick's Old Cathedral to this day. Bishop DuBois, who is buried at the front of the cathedral, is also rumored to haunt the property. His ghost has been seen walking around the grounds.
