The Dakota 1 W 72nd St New York, NY 10023 The Dakota opened in 1884, and has since been dubbed the most exclusive building in New York City. With a 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom going for $29.6 million, it's understandable how not just anyone can afford to live there. The Victorian era co-op was the home of John Lennon and Yoko Ono from 1972 - 1980, and was also the place of his murder on December 8, 1980 at the hands of Mark David Chapman, a crazed fan who shot the legend in front of his wife at the entrance of the building. Rumor has it that Lennon's spirit still haunts this location, maybe it's because he was killed there, or maybe it's because his wife still dwells in the residence. Numerous family members and friends of Lennon, including his son Julian and former band mate, Sir Paul McCartney, believe they were visited by the famous musician after his death. There's also been reports that the spirits of two children - a girl and a boy - have been living rent free in The Dakota and roaming the halls for decades. The garb they allegedly sport is that from the late 1800s not long after the hotel opened. The building itself is creepy enough from the outside, which made it the perfect location to shoot the 1968 horror film, "Rosemary's Baby."
