14 West 10th Street Manhattan, New York When a property is deemed "The House of Death" you know there's bound to be at least one gut-wrenching story attached to it. On West 10th Street in NYC stands a beautiful brownstone that hides a dark past. Many consider it to be one of the most haunted locations in New York. There are said to be 22 different ghosts who haunt this single space. It was built in 1856, and since then, a number of tenants have reportedly mysteriously died. The most famous ghostly resident is believed to be Mark Twain himself, who lived in the home when from 1900-1901. The most famous story to come from the residence happened on November 2, 1987, and it started at 6:40a.m. when many across the city were getting ready to start their day. Police received a call, and arrived to a disturbing scene. They found a woman who was severely beaten in her face, and was later found to have several broken bones. Police also came face-to-face with a man carrying a naked unconscious child who was bruised, beaten, and filthy. The little girl later died of her injuries. The man responsible for the beatings and murder, Joel Steinberg, was a criminal defense attorney in New York. He was released from prison in 2004 after serving a 16-year sentence. The most haunted part of the house is said to be the stairwell, where many of the ghosts make an appearance.
