16 Bank St New York, NY 10014 The building was built in 1844, and since then, it's had a history steeped in strange fires, odd happenings, and ghostly apparitions. Over the years, the building has been a tavern and a brothel, a carriage house, a teahouse and eventually, The Waverly Inn. Since the 1920s, there's been talk that the ghosts who haunt the establishment likes to set fires, some say for his own amusement and not to cause harm to others. A 1920s New York Times article discussed ghosts setting fires inside. However, in 1997, a fire almost burned the entire place down. During that fire, the Waverly Inn was destroyed except for one room - Room 16 - also known as the "smoking room." Rumor has it that it's the favorite room of one particular ghost who many customers have seen dressed in turn-of-the-century clothing, including sporting a top hat. Several other ghosts have been seen both inside and outside the restaurant. Strange noises have been heard, doors have opened and closed without reason, items have been switched and moved, and the feeling of a strong presence has been sensed throughout the building, sometimes out of nowhere. Employees as well as patrons have had up-close-and-personal experiences. The next time you sit down for dinner at The Waverly Inn, make sure to check around the room for a figure that looks just slightly out of place. He may just be the ghostly apparition everyone has been talking about. Credit: Yelp User Jazz F
