In Sex and the City, Charlotte York jogs around the 1.58-mile track surrounding the Central Park Reservoir. This reservoir has been renamed the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir, after the former First Lady in 1994 due to her contributions to New York City. Kennedy enjoyed jogging around the reservoir, since she lived nearby, on Fifth Avenue, the same street for Carrie and Big's penthouse. It remains a main destination for joggers today. The reservoir was built between 1858 and 1862, and was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. Its purpose was originally to gather water from the Croton Aqueduct in Westchester and distribute it to Manhattan. But in 1993, it was no longer needed because of the new main built under 79th street that connects to the Third Water Tunnel, going from Yonkers north of Manhattan and extends as far as Brooklyn, where Miranda moved with her husband and son. The reservoir occupies 106 acres and contains more than one billion gallons of water. Today, the reservoir is used to feed water into the Central Park Pool, also built by Olmsted and Vaux, and the Harlem Meer, a lake in the northeastern corner of Central Park. The Central Park Reservoir is a popular tourist destination, especially when its pink cherries are in bloom. There is also wildlife here in this urban oasis; you can see geese, loons, raccoons, and various birds. Jog around it enough and you may actually be as fit as Charlotte!
