Carrie meets with her new assistant, Louise, at a Starbucks in the East Village. Starbucks started in Seattle's famous Pike Place Market in 1971, with a mission to "inspire and nurture the human spirit - one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time." The East Village is the West Village's bratty, anti establishment little sister. When rents got too high in the West Village, artsy folks, students and hippies began migrating to the East village to join the Beatniks who had lived there since the 1950s. Even more than Greenwich Village's western section, the East Village has become known for its counterculture, including tattoos, punk rock, piercing, protests, and even riots. Some less expensive restaurants are here too - that is, less expensive for Manhattan.
