Mr. Big's apartment is believed to be on the Upper East Side, but is not. In reality, it's filmed at the Penthouse Piano Suite of the Hotel Giraffe in Gramercy Park. Other scenes from the movie were shot in this hotel as well. Gramercy Park is another of New York's neighborhoods in which the actual Gramercy Park is only accessible to residents living around the park who pay an annual fee. This park was once a swamp. In 1831, developer Samuel B. Ruggles bought the swamp land and built the park over it. Today, it is considered an upscale and safe neighborhood. Due to irregularities in the earth beneath it, and also zoning laws, buildings here are no more than about 20 stories high. The Hotel Giraffe generally ranks as one of the top ten hotels on tripadvisor (Would Big take anything less?). It opened in 1999 and has been renovated several times since. The rooms are done in rich colors and textures in the Art Moderne style.
