The New York Public Library is a New York landmark. It is the site of the wedding Carrie plans with Big. This fits "Carrie's" profession as a writer. In the movie she mentions how she still likes to borrow books from the library because of how they smell. With its high ceilings and ornate carvings, it is a place loved by readers. Taking up the entire 2-block expanse on Fifth Avenue between 40th and 42nd streets, the Public Library's main building sits on what was once the Croton Reservoir. Construction began in 1902 with a scheduled opening of 1905, but delays forced the library to open in May 23, 1911. It cost $9 million to build and stored over one million books. It was designed in the Beaux-Arts style(similar to New York's Grand Central Terminal) and was the biggest marble building in the US at the time. The NY Public Library building has grown and been renovated, but has not been without controversy. In 2004, it did away with the Asian and Middle East Division, as well as the Slavic and Baltic Divisions, sparking criticism. Then there's the Google Books Library Project, in which books from this and other libraries around the world would be scanned and available to the public online. Notable movies filmed at the library include Ghostbusters, Spiderman, and The Thomas Crown Affair.
