If you are a Sex and the City fan, you know how iconic Vogue magazine is to fashion and to Carrie, the televsion show's lead chararcter. Featured not only in the Sex and the City movie, the magazine was also the inspiration for the movie "The Devil Wears Prada", starring Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep. Streep played the editor-in-chief of a high-end fashion magazine, like Vogue, and was allegedly portraying Anna Wintour, the editor of Vogue, with her intimidating personality and withering facial expressions. In Sex and the City, this role was played by Candice Bergen, who acidly tells Carrie that 40 is the oldest age a woman could be featured in the magazine as a bride. Vogue plays by a different set of rules, with fashions that, for the most of us, are not only out of reach financially, but sometimes a tad over the top visually. This does not phase Carrie, of course, who gladly poses in a fashion spread for the magazine, wearing incredible wedding gowns by Vivienne Westwood (who later gives Carrie the dress as a gift), Vera Wang, Dior, LaCroix, and others. The magazine was established in 1892, when Arthur Turnure founded it as a weekly publication in the US. In 1909, Conde Montrose Nast took over and changed it to a bi-weekly magazine. In 1916 it expanded to Britain, and later to Spain, Italy, and France. Profitability and circulation steadily increased. In the 1960s, with Diana Vreeland at the helm, it began to reflect more of popular culture and addressing the sexual revolution by featuring more fashion of the moment. It was then that the "downtown" scene was promoted, featuring people such as Andy Warhol. Vogue spawned some of the first supermodels, including Lauren Hutton, Marisa Berenson, and Twiggy. In 1973, Vogue became a monthly magazine, always remaining current to reflect the changing lifestyles of its readers. However, by 1988, the new magazine "Elle" threatened to surpass it. It was then that editor-in-chief Anna Wintour took over, making drastic changes and securing it as, according to the New York Times, "the world's most influential fashion magazine." The New York Times said of her, "She may be scary, but you've got to admit, she's a fashion legend."
