Americans were not eager to enter World War I, and Americans of German ancestry tended to support Germany, not Britain and France. The government's first task was to convince citizens that they must support the war effort without reservation. The U.S.A. entered World War I in April 1917, but lost no time in producing many more propaganda posters than any other single nation. These posters encompassed recruitment to the various armed services, plus - frequently - the raising of war finance via the hugely successful liberty bond issues.
