Your walking tour continues to the statue Portlandia which is the second-largest copper hammer statue in the United States, only second to the Statue of Liberty herself, and is the namesake of the popular television show. The artists of the statue, Raymond Kaskey, Greg Pettengill and Michael LaSalle, built portions of the statue and shipped it form Maryland to Portland where it was assembled at a barge building and installed in October of 1985 after being floated up the Willamette River on a barge. The statue is 34 feet, 10 inches high. If she were standing, the woman who carries the trident and reaches down to greet visitors would stand at 50 feet. If she looks familiar, she appears in the title sequence of the TV show Portlandia. Another interesting fact about Portlandia is that her artist, Raymond Kaskey, has chosen to retain all rights to the statue which means she cannot be reproduced. You won't get to buy any tiny replicas while you are here! As the official greeter and personification of Portland, we hope you feel welcome and at home as she greets you.
