After Peter's crucifixion in the circus, his broken body was brought to the cemetery by his faithful followers and solemnly buried. The first church on the site of St Peter's Basilica was constructed around 325. The Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine had the apse centered on St Peter's tomb and replaced the simple red stone memorial that had stood marking the gravesite. The initial church was very similar in style to the Basilica of St Paul Outside the Wall, and used materials from the buildings that once surrounded the Circus of Nero. After serving as a church for 1,000 years and with the return of the papacy to Rome from Avignon, city leaders decided to demolish the old and now ruinous Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine to build a completely new one. The work started in 1455, and after a number of changes in design and architect, including the great artist Michelangelo, construction was finally completed in 1593. The inspiring building that you see here is one of the most visited churches throughout the world. The beautifully decorated St Peter's Basilica stands as a magnificent edifice to the man, his deep convictions, and unwavering faith. Photo credit: Alberio2006
