The next stop on our tour is not a haunted building, but the sight of several Halloween events. Nevertheless, the Old Mint has an impressive history. Built in 1854 by architect, Alfred Bult Mullett, the structure was designed with earthquakes in mind. The building was made to "float" on its foundations and in 1906 the great California earthquake hit. The building sustained minor damages, but was able to continue business and saved millions of dollars that had been minted. The mint continued to operate until 1937 and in 1961 the mint was named a National Historic Landmark. The Old Mint has played host for an annual Halloween Ball as well as an expansive, interactive Haunted House. The Old Mint as a historic building makes for the perfect setting for Halloween events. The Annual Ball started in the beginning of the millennium and has continued every year for those seeking a party in a spooky location for Halloween. The Haunted House lasted six days and sectioned itself off into different areas that were appropriate for children as well as those seeking to get the breath scared out of them. The Granite Lady, as the old mint became known as in the 1970s for the granite floor the structure sits atop, will soon open its doors as a museum about the history of the mint; nevertheless, the old building still stands out as a creepy destination for many visiting San Francisco.
