The walls at 14 North Newstead seem to not only talk, but so do imprisoned former inmates at the long-ago police station. The police station, constructed in the early 1900s, no longer operates as such, though many families who lived in the building have reported spiritual sightings that suggest it still exists on a paranormal plane. The North Newstead Police Station hosted brutal interrogations of prisoners, including one in 1945 that lead to the death of a theft suspect. Historians have revealed that the former station was an unfortunate location for battery (or worse), much of which occurred in the building’s basement and jail cells. After the precinct as shut down in the 1960s, the building was turned into a single-family lodging. Residents reported hearing unidentifiable voices, screams and cries. The terrorized spirits were so regular that some families abandoned the home out of fear. While most of the ghosts were of prisoners, others were regular visitors to the station, such as officers and their families. At one time, psychics were able to identify some of the ghostly figures and their tales of misery. When the residing family was offered a home cleansing, they refused, and relocated to a new home. Because of it’s permanent inhabitants, the former police station is no longer hospitable to families, but some businesses have taken up shop in the building. Employees of various businesses have mentioned footsteps, screams in the night and other mysterious activities. Photo courtesy Google Maps.
