Music, dancing, theater… and ghosts. The Powell Symphony Hall in St. Louis has stood the test of time since it’s opening in 1925. The decadently designed and decorated theatre is home to a variety of performers and musicians, some who’ve decided to spend forever in the building’s backstages. Apparitions, door slamming and footsteps, flickering lights and malfunctioning elevators have all been witnessed at the elegant theater. During some performances, problems with lights and sounds affects the show, and it’s all blamed on one apparition. George, an unidentified former entertainer, is the theater’s most visible non-stop performer. For decades, individuals spending large amounts of time in the building have made mentions of George. The ghostly figure dons a white suit and hat, and many believe him to be a former vaudeville performer. Because of his backstage presence, many who work at the theater believe that George may have been responsible for working the lights, curtains and other particulars of the show business, with a desire to do more. Visits from paranormal research crews indicate spirits of a softer persuasion. Several female ghosts are said to enjoy the ever-changing art in the symphony hall, and are irritated by visitors who mistake them for George. Photos courtesy Dan Dreyfus and Alise O'Brien.
