Several weeks after President Kennedy's assassination, in December, 1963, Jackie Kennedy and her children took up residence in this 14-room mansion, owned by Undersecretary of State, W. Averell Harriman, during a period of intense mourning of her husband'?s loss. According to Mrs. Kennedy's secretary, Mary Ghallager, Jackie's bedroom was on the second floor and she seldom left it. She wept. She drank. By turns unable to sleep and tormented by recurrent nightmares that caused her to awaken screaming.
