Looking east away from Georgetown on M Street, you will see the modern-looking M Street Bridge, which crosses Rock Creek Park. In 1788, a wooden draw bridge was built over Rock Creek connecting Georgetown with the newly developing area to the east, soon to be designated as the site of the Nation'?s Capitol. The new bridge was heavily trafficked, and suffered a collapse soon afterward, and a stagecoach full of passengers lost their lives in the plummet down the ravine toward the creek bed. When another bridge was subsequently built in the early 1800s, Georgetown residents reported seeing a lone stage coach on moonless nights racing down what is now M street and disappearing across the span. Others reported seeing the apparition of a young drummer boy, which has been traced to legends of such a drummer who was knocked off the bridge to fall to his death in a windstorm during the Revolutionary War. In the quiet hours before dawn, witnesses claimed they heard the faint sound of drumming, getting louder and louder still near the center of the bridge, and then suddenly going quiet as they approached the center of the bridge. There are also reports of a headless man seen from the east side of the bridge, whose origins remain a mystery.
