The cemetery contains the final resting place of many notable figures. The Cemetery's founder William Corcoran himself was buried here in 1888. His grave is marked by a marble, eight-columned Doric temple located on near the north edge of the cemetery on a mound several hundred feet down the hill from the Chapel. At the far east end of the cemetery, atop another hill is the Van Ness Mausoleum, which houses the family of New York Senator John Peter Van Ness. The Mausoleum is a registered historic place, designed by George Hadfield, after the Temple of Vesta in Rome. Inside the cemetery wall from the corner of R Street and 28th Street is the monument to E.M. Stanton, President Lincoln's Secretary of War. The grave or Richard T . Merrick, Attorney for John Surratt, a Lincoln assassination conspirator is located near the chapel on across avenue. E.D.E.N. Southworth, resident of Prospect Cottage next to the "exorcist stairs" is buried below the chapel just next to "chapel avenue." At the top of Reno Hill in the central part of the cemetery is buried Antonia Ford Willard, a notorious Confederate spy who fell in love with her captor Gen. Joseph Willard on way to Fairfax Courthouse prison and later married him.
