The Old Stone House is Washington DC's oldest standing building. Built in 1765 by Christopher and Rachel Layman, it was sold soon after completion to Cassandra Chew, a wealthy Georgetown widow. She expanded the original structure over the decades leading up to the American Revolution. It was a private home for nearly two hundred years, in which time it has gathered a truly exceptional number of reports of sightings of different spirits. They include: a woman wearing a brown dress standing near the mantelpiece, a large woman standing sometimes on the stairs and other times in the kitchen, a blond man in a blue jacket, a man wearing short pants and stockings, a woman rocking in a chair on the third floor, a small boy running in the third floor hallway, a man in Colonial-era clothing in the upstairs bedroom, a young girl with curly hair running up and down the staircase, and an African American boy. The most malevolent of the hauntings of this structure is nicknamed, "George" and has reportedly choked and pushed visitors, and caused intense feelings of cold temperature and overwhelming dread.
