5. On the Hill GalleryThe Burcher Cottageon Historic Yorktown's Main Street was constructed during the late 1800s, but the exact date is unknown. This building is not present in Matthew Brady's Civil War photographs, but it appears in a photograph taken during the late 1870s. The Burcher Cottage was home to the Spinning Wheel Gift Shop during the 1960s, and later became the Yorktown Shoppe, which closed in 2013. This building, which is owned by the National Park Service, currently houses the On the Hill Gallery. Formerly known as the Gallery on the York, the gallery moved into its new facilities in 2014. On the Hill Gallery is a showcase for Tidewater artists to display and sell their work. They also host monthly artist luncheons, provide art classes at the York County Convalescent Center, and offer instructional programs to the public.
