Lieutenant Alexander Sutherland designed the British defenses around Yorktown, and Lord Cornwallis approved his plans. Eight redoubts, including the Horn Work, surrounded Yorktown. These redoubts and batteries were connected by parapets and trenches and encircled the town. Redoubt Number 1, which was located between Buckner and Martiau Streets, was in front of the British line facing northwest. It occupied most of colonial lots 1 and 4, and may have also extended into lots 2 and 5. This redoubt is no longer visible, but French maps of the time period and examples of other redoubts could be used to reconstruct it. At this time York County owns all of the lots except for 5. An archaeological study would be needed to locate exactly where the redoubt and other significant structures were located before reconstruction could begin.
