Built in 1910 to house the State Supreme Court, as well as various local courts, this Beaux-Arts building would rise in place of dozens of historic buildings on a block then cut in half by the Exchange Alley. Abandoned by the courts for decades, it reopened as the home of the Louisiana State Supreme Court in 2004. Decades of trials and rancorous proceedings have left their mark in this imposing structure, with a handful of hauntings seeming to revolve around the building's legal legacy. A young African-American couple, dressed in clothes from the 1930s, are frequently seen through the years walking the halls together. They have been spotted by film crews on closed sets filming legal dramas, as well as by security guards in the late night hours. The man is typically seen in a white shirt and tie, the woman in a brown skirt and suit. It is believed that they were gunned down in the courthouse by a Mafia hit man while waiting to testify in the trial of a mob boss. Another male figure, dressed in a black suit, is often reported on the upper floors, turning lights on and off. He is frequently seen from the Omni Royal Hotel across St. Louis Street from the Courthouse, with guests calling the front desk to complain that a strange man is staring at them from the windows across the way. He is believed by many to be the spirit of a lawyer in the 1950s who lost a major case before the Supreme Court and killed himself in the building.
