Seattle History

Seattle is located on the traditional lands of the Suquamish and Duwamish tribes among others who occupied the area for thousands of years before the arrival of white settlers in 1851.

George Vancouver was the first European to visit the Seattle area, in 1792, while on an expedition to chart the Pacific Northwest. In 1851, a party of settlers led by Luther Collins established a small village on the eastern shore of Puget Sound and called it Seattle, after the chieftain of the resident Native American tribes, who welcomed them to the are.

Gateway to the Klondike

Inspired by the seemingly endless supply of forest, some of the original settlers established a site for a sawmill that would be powered by a steam engine, turning the budding settlement into an important logging town. With the aid of animals, woodcutters slid, or "skidded" cut timber down a greased logging road to the sawmill. This "skid road" would soon separate Seattle's wealthy neighborhoods from the mill, and the name evolved into "skid row", a term that refers to the poorer and seedy area of a city.

The advent of the transcontinental railroad, the demand for lumber, and the development of a port that increased shipping activity cuase an influx of growth in the city over a few decades. But it would be a dream of vast riches that would dramatically transform Seattle.

In 1897, a ship from Alaska carrying prospectors and "a tone of gold" dug out of Canada's Yukon territory docked in Seattle, igniting a rush of gold fever that drew thousands to the port city.

Seattle was proclaimed far and wide as the "Gateway to the Gold Fields"- where prospectors could obtain the goods needed for a mining expedition to the Klondike. The torrent of people and money that flowed through Seattle dramatically transformed the port city into a booming and prosperous metropolis.

"Don't get excited and rush away only half prepared. You are going to a country where grub is more valuable than gold and frequently can't be bought for any price. We can fit you out quicker and better than any firm in town."

Cooper & Levy, The Seattle Times, 1897

Dawn of a New Era

Despite occasional downturns, including a devastating fire in 1889 that inspired a brand-new city to be built, Seattle's economic and population growth continued into the 20th century. The advent of Microsoft and other computer companies led the way in establishing Seattle as a technology titan, and tech industry opportunities replaced the lure of gold for new arrivals to the city. The establishment of the popular coffee chain Starbucks and retail giant Amazon secured Seattle's status as a forerunner in cultural and technological advancement.

An increasingly diverse population profoundly broadened Seattle's landscape and character, giving rise to an image of a city that is ever-changing and always looking to the future.

Tom Robbins
