The Legacy of the Welty House

Constructed in 1838, the Welty House stands as a silent witness to a tumultuous past marred by immense historical significance and unimaginable tragedy. Amidst the crossfire of the Confederate and Union Armies during the defining battle, the Welty House experienced the deafening sounds of bullets whizzing back and forth, symbolizing the precarious fate of a nation hanging in the balance. Even today, this storied property bears visible scars from that momentous clash.

During the battle, the Welty House found itself caught in the midst of the chaos and violence that engulfed the town. Its strategic location near the front lines made it a crucial site for both Union and Confederate forces. The Welty House stood witness to fierce combat during the Battle of Gettysburg, serving as a strategic location for Confederate sharpshooters.

During the battle, the Welty House provided refuge to the Solomon Welty family and their neighbors, the Rupps, who sought safety in its basement amidst the chaos of war. The Welty property remained an active scene of skirmishes as the front lines continued to shift and clash.

An assault on Cemetery Hill by Confederate forces resulted in a devastating aftermath with numerous casualties strewn across the battlefield. The Welty House itself faced the imminent threat of destruction as Union artillery prepared to bombard the area. However, in a decision aimed at minimizing potential civilian casualties, officers ordered the home to be spared from destruction.

In the aftermath, the Welty House property became a temporary resting place for 36 Union and Confederate soldiers, marking a solemn reminder of the lives lost during the conflict.

Following the Battle of Gettysburg, the Welty House resumed its role as a private residence, its walls carrying the scars and memories of the battle. Over time, sections of the property were sold and the Victorian mansion that is the current Brickhouse Inn was constructed. Stories of paranormal activity and hauntings in both homes began to circulate, with reports of ghostly apparitions, unexplained sounds, and eerie experiences within the rooms and surrounding area.

Today, the Welty House stands as a testament to the courage and resilience of those who lived through the tumultuous era of the Civil War. It serves as a window into the past, providing visitors with a tangible connection to the events that unfolded during the Battle of Gettysburg. As a historic site and a reputedly haunted location, the Welty House continues to captivate and intrigue visitors, offering a glimpse into the enduring echoes of history that still resonate within its walls.

The Echoes of War

The traumatic events that occurred during the Battle of Gettysburg has left a residual energy that permeates the house and its grounds. Located only steps from the Gettysburg’s battlefield, the property became a burial site for Confederate soldiers who perished near the home. It is believed the grounds of the Welty House have absorbed the emotions, pain, fear, and hope experienced by both occupants and soldiers who sought shelter beneath its roof.

These echoes of the past have led to reported sightings, unexplained phenomena, and unsettling experiences on the property, making the Welty House a place of intrigue and speculation for supernatural enthusiasts. The residual hauntings serve as a poignant reminder of the profound impact that the battle had on the house and the individuals who were connected to it during that turbulent time in history.

“In the walls of the Welty House, the echoes of history reverberate, revealing the scars of a nation divided and the spirits that linger amidst its hallowed grounds.”
