28. Lena HorneLena Mary Calhoun Horne was an African-American singer, dancer, actress, and civil rights activist. She was born on June 30, 1917, in Brooklyn, New York, and died on May 9, 2010, in New York City. Her career in entertainment spanned over 70 years. Whatever platform Lena chose to show her talents in, film, television, or theater, she always gave 100%, and that is the same passion that she brought to the civil rights movement! She participated in numerous marches and protests, toured with Paul Robeson during WW II entertaining the troops, refused to perform for segregated audiences, worked with Eleanor Roosevelt to pass anti-lynching laws, and was at the March on Washington in 1963. Lena worked tirelessly to further the cause of justice and equality throughout her life. She was married two times and had two children.
