More troops were sent in to quell the riotous slaves. In central Italy, Lentulus made an attempt to surround the rebel force, but they successfully overcame the consular's hastily constructed battle plan. Lentulus lost many of his officers in the battle, and Spartacus' men managed to capture his baggage train and much of his armory too. As they continued north, the only thing that stood between the slaves and the Alpine passes were the armies of Consular Malius and the Praetor Cassius at Mutina, now known as Modena. Spartacus' troops prepared for another battle against the massed ranks of Cassius' army in Mutina. Cassius' force numbered a meager 10,000 local men who tried to halt the slave's journey northwards. The superior numbers at Spartacus' disposal meant he could drive into the heart of Cassius' troops. It didn't take long for resistance to collapse, with Cassius barely escaping with his life. Opinions were now divided: the road was clear all the way to the Alps, but the Gauls and Germans were having too much fun and wanted to stay plundering the surrounding land. There was even talk of attacking Rome itself. After much discussion, it was decided to head south and try to raise further support on the notoriously rebellious island of Sicily.
