Despite this setback, Crassus did win several small victories and succeeded in pushing Spartacus and his men further south towards the shore. By 71BC, the rebel force found itself encamped in Rhegium, or present day Reggio Calabria, near the straits of Messina, the shortest route across to Sicily. Spartacus was now facing disagreements himself: the Gauls, under the leadership of Ganicus and Cestus, took 12,000 men with them, deciding instead to roam the Lucanian countryside seeking out estates and farms to plunder. As the Gauls camped beside a lake, they were suddenly attacked by a legion of Romans from Crassus' force. A desperate battle began, and as the tranquil waters trapped the rebel's escape, it rapidly became a fight to the death.
