Brews and Boos in America's Capital
Did you know Washington D.C was full of bootlegging and speakeasies while pretending to be dry during Prohibition?
Although the nation's capital was lauded by legislators as a model of temperance, Washington D.C. was, in reality, a hotebed of illegal hooch, with over 3,000 speakeasies and secret saloons operating in the the district. The Potomac River acted as a highway for illegal liquor transportation and at one time as much as 22,000 gallons per week would disperse through the city, eventually ending up in the glasses of the very lawmakers who banned it.
