Welcome to the final resting place of Key West's dead. Many graves date back to the mid-1800's and the numbers of those laid to rest within the confines of the cemetery gates greatly outnumber those living outside these gates. It's estimated that almost 75,000 bodies are buried here. Many of these poor souls were victims of yellow fever, which rampaged this island in the late 1880's. Others were lost in the great fire of 1886 and many more lost their lives during the great Battleship Maine disaster in 1898. Let's not forget those who died in hurricanes or at the end of a hangman's noose. Considering the age of this cemetery and the tragic circumstances surrounding the deaths of those buried here, it's not surprising that many of them walk these nineteen acres of graveyard in search of something. Mind your manners while treading this hallowed ground. The spirit of a Bahamian woman is listening to your conversations and watching your actions. To those who make jokes about the dead or show disrespect in any way, this angry spirit makes her presence known. To many would-be vandals she has appeared in full form and stared directly into their unbelieving eyes. Her energy is strong and she is able to express her anger aloud. She has verbally threatened more than one disrespectful visitor causing them to run for their very lives. On warm, quiet evenings before dusk, many people hear the whispers of unseen visitors. The police have been called more than once by visitors to the cemetery because they were certain that vandals were hiding nearby. They could hear whispering but no matter where they searched, they couldn't find anyone. Others have been walking through the cemetery and have heard a breathless whisper near their ear. Many people have seen shadows and apparitions at several locations of the property. These sightings occur both day and night. Frequently, visitors to the cemetery take photos only to discover later on that their picture shows the figure of a person who wasn't there when the photo was taken. This is Key West's cemetery and its residents are dying for you to join them.
