The small, slow-paced community of Medina rests a short drive from Akron. But don't let the appearance of calm trick you, this location is haunted. The city lies along the west branch of the Rocky River, and if you head towards the appropriately named "Styx River Road" you will come across an old abandoned train bridge. Newspaper records show that on the cool morning of March 22nd , 1899, the Erie Limited train was heading west from the city of Akron, when its engine suddenly failed. A driving rod had snapped, and the train was whirring out of control. Alexander Logan, the Limited's engineer, frantically tried to switch the train into reverse to stop its advance. But it was too late. The train was moving too fast, and the bridge was quickly approaching. Logan steered the train towards the River Styx, praying that somehow he and his passengers would survive a water landing. His gamble paid off. All passengers survived the crash. All but one. Amongst the wreckage, Logan's body was found, his hand still grasped to the clutch, his face frozen in fear. The bridge still stands as a majestic and eerie structure erected over the river, spanning over 100 feet in length. If you come to River Styx Road on a foggy morning and gaze upon the bridge, you may see the Erie Limited emerge out of the fog. Chills will shoot down your spine as the faint screams of passengers echo through the clearing while the train topples over the bridge.
