Perhaps one of the most well-known locations in Akron Ohio, it should be no surprise that the weight of history has left the University with a number of ghosts. The University quickly expanded and purchased neighboring land on which to build dorms and classrooms. Some of this land was a burial ground. Troubled ghosts reportedly haunt students in the night in many of the campus buildings, especially in the older buildings resting on cemetery grounds. Sigma Nu's current fraternity house, which was purchased from a sorority, was the sight of a grisly suicide when a sorority sister hung herself in the basement. Many believe that the boiler room is haunted, and some tenants in Sigma Nu are afraid to venture into the basement without company in fear of an ethereal experience. And, there is a haunted sorority house on campus. That ghost is quite temperamental, throwing things at passer-byers and wandering the upper floors at all hours of the night. Sorority sisters claim to have dishes and plates thrown at them, as they break against the wall. Closet doors in the attic also swing open and slam shut on their own. And when no one is upstairs, the sisters can hear furniture moving around on its own. However, the most frightening ghost that haunts the University's campus roams around the school's apartment housing on Sherman Street. Residences of the apartments speak of an apparition that creeps around the building at night, slowly creaking and cracking the old wooden floors. Several residence attest to being awoken by this ghost, who slowly tapped on their shoulders, disrupting their slumber. The victims would awaken to a small, dark figure. It was a little boy wearing a fedora who merely stared intently before disappearing into the night. It is believed that the little boy had died in these apartments long ago, and that his ghost still searches the beds of the building for his parents.
