A Hollywood Journey
9. Hollywood First National Bank
Hollywood, CA
On the northeast corner of Hollywood Blvd and Highland Ave, the Hollywood First National Bank opened in 1927 and was the tallest building in LA, before City Hall opened up later that year. An architectural firm, Meyer and Holler, constructed the sober style Spanish-Goth design with four-foot-high gargoyles. Later that year, the same architects built the more fanciful and imaginative Grauman's Chinese Theater, the flagship of Hollywood Blvd. During the 1950s Superman television series, the journalist-turned-superhero leapt into flight from this railing-type rooftop.
