A Hollywood Journey
Musso & Frank GrillA Hollywood Journey
19. Musso & Frank GrillMusso & Frank Grill is Hollywood's oldest and most enduring restaurant, opened in 1919 by Joseph Musso & Frank Toulet. It's an immediate favorite to locals and visitors through its prominent high ceilings, tuxedoed waiters and red booths for celebrities. Once inside, you can see an iconic Charlie Chaplin facing the boulevard next to the front corner window. The locals nicknamed it "Musso's" and Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks repeatedly raced on horseback with one another down Hollywood Blvd for the grand prize of eating at this local hotspot. F. Scott Fitzgerald, William Faulkner and Raymond Chandler ate here, but more often drank at its bar during the 1940s. Faulkner mixed his own mint juleps during his long Saturdays at Musso's. After one extended Saturday, Faulkner furtively met with Meta Carpenter, a script girl at 20th Century-Fox, and they left together to the Knickerbocker Hotel on Ivar Ave where they began an 18-year affair.
